Shostakovich himself played the piano part with inimitable mastery, displaying an expressiveness and imaginative power unique to him.

Shostakovich reluctantly came to the conclusion that if the text of Gogol's one-act play were to be uncut it would far exceed the limits of contemporary operatic convention. He abandoned work on it after composing forty minutes of magnificent, coruscatingly witty music, which we were eventually able to hear at the Leningrad Philharmonia in a performance conducted by Gennady Rozhdestvensky.
