There are more 'transportable* plants of the Steelfields type. Less emphasis is placed on the in-ground storage bins and automated plants are rare. Output is generally 3 . around 100 m per hour and in-plant mixing with a compulsory or turbine mixer seems popular. Germany. Ready mixed concrete production started in 1955 with two plants 3 . . 3 producing 50 thousand m annually compared with 54 million m from 2150 plants in 1972. There are now approximately 2400 batch plants, comprising mostly 3 tower and drag line arrangements.
The basis for the above assumptions is comparison of a number of operators with two different arrangements and similar maintenance and operating standards. . 5m, 8 m and 10 m , are now briefly considered. The most 3 3 . acceptable were 5 m and 6 m truckmixers, which accounted for 32% and 61% respectively of truckmixer sales in Europe during 1974, the remaining 7% being . . 3 the other capacities with only two 10 m being sold in Germany. Traffic and 3 other problems limit the effectiveness of the 8 and 10 m truckmixers.
Concrete was, in the main, used for low level concrete only; brickwork was often used where concrete would be used today. 38 I. C. Leggott Fig. 3. Early small hand-operated concrete or mortar mixer. The Rapier Jaeger truckmixer consists of a horizontal drum, rotated preferably by means of an independent petrol engine, but provision may be made for driving from the lorry engine. The drum with its engine and gearbox is mounted upon any standard lorry chassis of suitable capacity, from which it can be removed in a few minutes, should the necessity arise.
