When price nears the top of the channel, be prepared to exit. If price approaches the channel line and then goes horizontal, consider exiting. This is different from a trendline trade where you wait for the breakout from the congestion region. With channel trading, the channel is a support or resistance area, and price is telling you that it has lost momentum. Frequently, that means it is going to reverse. Take the hint and close out the trade. Check the historical price record to verify that this is true for the stock you are trading.

Here is my interpretation of this: stocks that form straight-line runs after the breakout tend to throwback or pullback more often than do those not forming straight-line runs. If you are not paying attention, then take another sip of coffee because that is an important finding. I checked my chart pattern database and found that 152 of 196 cases of a straight-line run during or after an upward breakout lead to a throwback. That is a 78 percent success rate. ) Pullbacks show the same tendency to occur after a straight-line run down from a breakout.

Price should begin the climb from A to C following a straight-line run or nearly so. That is not a deal breaker if there is a bend and price can hesitate (consolidate) along the way. The top of the pattern should have a rounded turn that appears smooth, especially for smaller patterns, but larger ones often have an irregular shape. The retrace to B can vary in size (that is, the retrace of the A to C move), but often measures about 53 percent. Be flexible with the retrace. 4 is 31 percent.
