Further commenting that ‘binge drinking’ and the 5/4 definition were concepts that many of their students saw as unrelated to them, Goodhart et al. (2003) proposed a system of definitions intended to have greater personal relevance. Rather than using volume based criteria they suggest that students be encouraged to identify their binge drinking on the basis of their own subjective feelings of drunkenness and subsequent behaviour. By making the conceptualisation of binge drinking more recognisable to them, Goodhart et al hope that more students would in fact acknowledge that they are drinking in a harmful style.
