When we are content with our work, it is good and we feel heartful. 12 Part 1: Professional Quality of Life † † † When we internalize suffering, it is bad; we become compassion fatigued and heart heavy. When we are discontent and become disconnected from our work, distancing ourselves from others, it is ugly; we are suffering from burnout and are seemingly empty hearted or heartless. How we go about our work is important and can provide clues as to what we need to do for ourselves and for others to transform health and healing for all.
I encountered Eddie while working as a staff nurse in critical care. He had been admitted to our cardiac intensive care unit with an inferior wall myocardial infarction and was placed on several IV medications, an arterial line and swan ganz were inserted, and oxygen therapy was started. As compassionate carers we, ourselves, are vulnerable to co-suffer with others and to become compassion fatigued. In our line of work, caring makes all the difference. How one goes about providing care is paramount to healing; we always need to be cognizant of how we relate to others. There are two types of care in nursing: the instrumental, which refers to the technical and physical aspects of care, and the expressive, which relates to the psychosocial and emotional aspects (Woodward, 1997). In nursing, our ability to act in a compassionate manner entails using both kinds of caring.
